Manga Girl Develops a Heart of a Superhero

I remember the first time I heard the phrase, "human trafficking.” I immediately understood that it meant unthinkable suffering and that it should be stopped. In the back of my mind, I also wondered what I could do about it. After hearing about Reveal, I decided to volunteer as a Zumba teacher at one of the organization’s partnered women’s shelters monthly workshops. It was an eye opening experience to say the least. The security was tight, the women were inspiring, and I was reminded - yet again - how deeply I cared about the victims of sex trafficking, 80 percent of whom are females. When one of my friends suggested that someone should write a comic book to educate girls about the danger of sex trafficking, I immediately clicked with a concept. I had been writing novels, memoirs and screenplays for 20 years; and suddenly, there was this idea of a project that combined my passion of writing with an issue I cared about deeply - protecting children from predators. ABOLITIONISTA! is the comic book that resulted. The book is about a 12-year-old girl named Eden whose best friend disappears. Eden collects the clues to solve the mystery of her friend’s disappearance and is led into the dark underground world of child sex trafficking. Along the way, she acquires the tools she needs to spot predators and protect herself from being trafficked.
